Neujahrskonzert
After a somewhat quieter period after Christmas, the season has picked up speed again. Not so our slow elevator, of course. Even nine of our cellists, who have an appointment with our Artist in Residence, cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason, for a concert upstairs in the Small Hall on 30 January, wouldn't be able to change its pace. So make sure you leave downstairs on time! We did a test ride with the cellists Viola Bayer and Nerina Mancini.
Viola: We rarely have the opportunity to make music with so many cello colleagues, it just puts us in a good mood. We can also play very high and very low on our instruments, so we can play all the parts in an ensemble.
Nerina: It just sounds fantastic. And it brings the section together.
Nerina: Over 100 - in a cello orchestra in Charlottenburg, where anyone can play. But there are rehearsals! The concert is in a church.
Viola (laughs): I can't compete with that number.
Viola: I always love Villa-Lobos' “Bachianas Brasileiras”!
Nerina (nods): Me too. We play that in the concert.
Viola: Always different depending on the piece - sometimes he is a soloist with us as accompaniment, sometimes he plays in groups of different sizes.
The door opens, a cleaner enters with a bulky cleaning trolley and we move to one side.
Nerina: Only with my heavy flight case. I push it in on its wheels.
Viola: We four female cellists carry our instruments up the few steps from the dressing room to the Great Hall in their cases on our backs. Upstairs, the cases stay behind the stage.
Nerina: Definitely the 10 of us.
Viola: And a double bass on top!
